Quick Review: Sputnik’s Happy Hour Tacos
May 30th, 2009 by rande

Sputnik just revised their menu and it is pretty awesome. Scott and I tried the tacos off the happy hour menu for something different and they did not disappoint. Both the fish and carnitas tacos are a solid choice and can’t be beat for only $2 each.

Got a ride down to (close to) Sputnik from Jen and met up with Sam who happened to be hanging out there. She had to go to a meeting for the kickball league nearby but Mr Lawan stopped by for a bit before heading next door for the show. I worked on some Internet fun and enjoyed some fine beers before Sam came back, we had some food, and then headed for the bus. We managed to see an adequate number of crazy people on the 0 and then made it to Market St in time for the 12:05 B to Boulder.

Sam had her “talk to me” face on because as we got on the bus some guy asked in a cute but very awkward manner “you look like you would be fun to talk to. Would you like to sit here?”

The Dave Burdick is in town and demanded my presence at “My Brother’s Bar” (which I subsequently posted a review about). It was fun hanging out with him and crew. We then migrated to the best bar in town and had a reunion with our Radio 1190 homies.

weather conspiracy
May 17th, 2009 by rande

Kristen and Sara headed to Vegas this weekend so I went down on Friday to drop off copies of my new mix cd. Much fun was had as Kristen tried to ride my bike, I watched her pack in an expert fashion, and then we hit up Wahoo’s Fish Tacos for some dinner.

Mini review: Wahoo’s chicken quesodillas. The quesodillas themselves are rather average but they do include a dish of both sour cream and guacamole which beats Illegal Pete’s one-or-the-other policy. The guacamole is actually pretty good too and tastes homemade.

There is something crazy going on with the weather or it could just be very coincidental, who knows. Last Saturday, I take my bike to Denver and Sara is in or near town = it pours rain. Friday, I take my bike to Denver and Sara is on her way from Glenwood = it pours rain. Extensive testing is needed but I am not sure I am up for a third wet ride to the Market St bus station.

I headed to the venerable Sputnik for a comfortable place to work on the Program Council email servers and then Scott and Ms. Finesilver joined me later and much fun was had. I even got a picture of Scott in a good mood.

The ride to the bus wasn’t quite as soggy this time but the drunks on the 2:20a B were as annoying as ever.

I woke up just in time to catch some excitement at the Broomfield park and ride.

Quick Review: My Brother’s Bar
May 16th, 2009 by rande

No, it’s not MY brother’s bar. The burgers would have been cheaper and the beer faster.

- Great atmosphere, we sat on the patio and it was loud but very party-like
- Really loud patio. Not bad, just strange to have other tables yelling when it is not necessary.
- for the price, the burgers need to come with more than just meat and bun. I am fine paying more for bacon but lettuce and tomato should always be included.
- awesome condiment/meal caddies that come with what appeared to be every order. Like a treasure chest full of onions, pickles, relish, ketchup, and mustard. also an excellent source of napkins and really tiny forks.

overall: 6/10 I enjoyed being there but the food did not fill me up and a beer and burger cost me $12.

To be fair, 96 doesn’t sound like as much fun.

Manchester Orchestra and Fun at the Marquis
May 14th, 2009 by rande

I was going to hit up the Rockies game on Tuesday with the big Boulder crew that headed down but then I remembered I had promised Lauren that I would see Manchester Orchestra with her. It would have been a sweet game to see since they beat the Astros 12-1 but the concert ended up being the right choice. Talked to Mike (owner) for a bit about old times and the music industry in general. On starting a venue he said, “get your head checked out and then think about it some more.” Mr. Ben Davis was there to see the show too even though it was his day off from managing.

The first two opening bands were decent but the good times really started when the band Fun when on stage. It’s made up of former members of The Format and they played a bunch of Format songs which were really good to hear live again.

The Marquis was packed for what ended up being a sold out show by the time Manchester Orchestra came on.

Afterward I met up with Jen and the rest of the crew for some drinks on a rooftop patio at 22nd and Market. Let’s just say that it has a pretty good view.
